Entering God’s Promised Rest with Jen Wilkin

Today we get to continue our biblical theology series and hear from Jen Wilkin about the promises of God from the book of Joshua. We hope this episode makes helpful connections for you throughout Scripture and causes you to marvel at the soul-rest God gives us in Christ Jesus and in the final rest he offers us when we will one day be with him.

NOTES & QUOTES

“When you think about being freed from the power of sin, means that now you have an ability by the power of the indwelling spirit to choose between sin and righteousness. And over the course of our time in the wilderness, Lord willing, we get better at choosing righteousness and we get slower at choosing sin. That's progressive sanctification.”

“Every time you say yes to righteousness and no to sin, you are effectively living out, thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth.”

“All personal sin has collateral impact, but also all personal obedience has collateral blessing.”

“We labor hard in this life, but we have soul rest because we know that our labor is not earning us entrance into the promised land because the true Israel has gone before us through the waters of the Jordan and he will bring us safely to the other side.”

“There are two ways to approach the Bible. One is to say, is God good? The other is to say, if God is good, then how is what I'm reading here something that contributes to my understanding of his goodness? That's a very hard perspective, but it's the way actually we're reading all of scripture and it's the way we're reading our lives.”

“We are working from a place of rest toward a place of ultimate rest.”

“Have a long horizon. This is a marathon, it's not a sprint. And no one knows that better than the one who determines our beginning and our end. He knows exactly what phase of life you're in. He knows exactly how much discretionary time you do or do not have. He is not judging you against a former version of yourself or a future version of yourself. Be faithful and little if that's all you have. And you will be entrusted with more.”

DISCUSSION QUESTIONS

  1. What is the difference between biblical literacy and biblical fluency?

  2. Where are some areas of your life in which you might need to walk in more obedience so as to increase collateral blessing to others? How does knowing you are freed from the power of sin and indwelt by the Holy Spirit help you choose obedience over sin?

  3. How can you live out of the rest God offers us even when we do sin—knowing he will never break covenant with us and will never leave nor forsake us?

  4. What are some ways you could gather to discuss the Word in community if you don’t already?

  5. What might you do or implement based on what you learned in this week’s episode?
