Prioritizing God’s Word with Raechel Myers
Today we get to hear from Raechel Myers of She Reads Truth about one of our favorite topics here at Journeywomen: loving and prioritizing God’s Word. We hope that this episode reminds you of the urgency of reading God’s Word, and we pray that—even now!—you will go pick up your Bible and meet Jesus in its pages.
NOTES & QUOTES
“I was just learning ‘What does the Bible say?’ Which is a really important thing to learn. If we don't learn that, then we can't know ‘What does the Bible mean’ or ‘How does that transform my life?’ We have to start with ‘What does it say?’”
“Our mission [at She Reads Truth] is women in the Word of God every day. Our conviction, our heartbeat is that the Bible is for you.”
“We started at a time in the world where many women would say they were outsourcing their Bible reading to women's ministry or to their pastors. They were saying, ‘Tell us about the Bible.’ And that happened in the early church; it's not bad. It's actually excellent and good to hear from other people, people who are maybe further along in their journey than us. But we have a wealth of access to Scripture. And I just don't know that we were stepping into that, especially as women.”
“[At She Reads Truth] We just go to the primary source. We don't start with anything, there's no preamble, we go to the Word and we read a lot of it every day. And then after we read the primary passage we go, ‘What does Scripture have to say about that? We let Scripture interpret Scripture.”
“This ancient text is so relevant to your life and my life today.”
“We just read the Bible every day. And so it's for the girls who are intimidated by the ancient text and the breadth of it, and also who don't really know where to start.”
“If today you're listening to this and you go, ‘The way that I live doesn't reflect what I say I believe about Scripture. If I say it's my authority, if I say God is love and Jesus is the answer, if I say that this is the way to know God, then do I live like that? Am I accessing this every day? Because I can.’”
“To the gal who isn't familiar with the Old Testament, my goodness, friend, you are missing out because the New Testament is in its full when you have read it in light of the Old Testament.”
“The Old Testament may be likened to a chamber richly furnished but dimly lighted; the introduction of light brings into it nothing which was not in it before; but it brings out into clearer view much of what is in it but was only dimly or even not at all perceived before. The mystery of the Trinity is not revealed in the Old Testament; but the mystery of the Trinity underlies the Old Testament revelation, and here and there almost comes into view. Thus the Old Testament revelation of God is not corrected by the fuller revelation that follows it, but only perfected, extended and enlarged.”
—Benjamin Breckinridge Warfied, Biblical Doctrines (New York: Oxford University Press, 1932; reprint, Grand Rapids: Baker, 2003), 141-42.
“You can't really read Hebrews without understanding the sacrificial system in Leviticus. I was reading John last week for a podcast episode, and we were recording the podcast and we get to the part about the resurrection and Mary goes into the tomb and there's the stone and he's not there. But John records that there's an angel at the foot of the stone and at the head of the stone and she's like, ‘Raechel, where have we seen a stone slab with angels on either end?’ And I was like, ‘The mercy seat!’ The mercy seat, the place where only God can reside, the place where only innocent blood can be shed. In Exodus, God says, ‘I will meet you at the mercy seat.’ And so when we read John, when that happens, in light of the mercy seat and the ark and the covenant that God makes… It's just like the lights are on. The lights are on.”
“I think sometimes we step into a folly of over-softening our call to read God's Word.”
“This is not only important; it is urgent. Reading and knowing God's Word is urgent. And we let so many other things feel more urgent to us and Bible reading gets pushed down on our to-do list. And I would just say, ‘View it as urgent.’ See it as: this is what will save my life. This is what will save the lives of those around me. It takes discipline. It takes really saying no to things so that you can say ‘yes’ to knowing what God's Word says, and it will do the work of transforming you.”
